George Washington Biography

George Washington, the first President of the United States,was born in Westmore- land, Virginia on February 22, 1732. His early years consisted of life on the farm with his 5 brothers and 1 sister. In 1753, Washington joined the army. In 1755, during the French & Indian War, Wash- ington gained a reputation for bravery under fire. He was named commander of the Virginia militia before retiring. |

But in 1774, Washington put aside his land and his wealth to help the American colonists revolt against the rule of King George III of England. Washington represented Virginia at the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1774. Later at the Second Continental Congress, after fighting had begun between British troops and American colonists in 1775, Washington was chosen to lead the American forces. |

After eight hard years of war, the American colonies won independence. George Washington is called the "Father of the country" for his role in forming the United States. He led the American forces in the Revolutionary War, was part of the Constitutional Convention that wrote the U.S. Constitution, and became the first U.S. President. Washington served two four-year terms as President of the United States, from 1789-1797, before retiring. He died in Mount Vernon, Virginia on December 14, 1799. |
